Madumongso: The East Javanese Alcoholic Candy

In my hometown in East Java, people celebrate the Eid Al Fitr by eating madumongso. Villagers make a large quantity of madumongso to give away, even to their non moslem neighbors. Madumongso is made of fermented/alcoholic glutinous rice, coconut cream, and coconut sugar. It is sweet .........and ..... alcoholic. A bite of it warms our throat.

When I was little I ate madumongso once a year during Eid Al Fitr. There is an age restriction for alcoholic beverages consumption here but not for alcoholic dessert consumption. Children are allowed to eat madumongso. Really...

Recipe:

1. Boil 2 cups of coconut cream with 1 cup of coconut sugar, and a pinch of salt until it caramelizes.

2. Add 2 cups of fermented purple glutinous rice (find out how to make it in my other post).

3. Keep stirring until the madumongso clumps into a sticky ball.

4. Let it cool and enjoy. (You can also wrap it like candy)
